Anthony’s Italian Deli

IN 1970, MARIA and Anthony Saia made their journey to the U.S. from Italy with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They discovered a little hole-in-the-wall place and decided to introduce familiar foods to Baton Rouge in 1978. With no family around, they created relationships with customers, who became part of the family. Maria and son Marco can be found in the deli each day serving the same Italian dishes they always have. The signature sandwich is the muffoletta, built around stacks of meat that are not only locally sourced, but also brought down from New York. The cheeses are imported from Italy. The olive salad is a homemade secret recipe, mixed and ground in-house. Even with secret recipes and the finest ingredients, what makes this muff stand out is the hot pressed bread. The Saia family taught their baker how to make the special bread themselves, and each sandwich is hot-pressed to order.
